Second suspect in killing of 18-year-old student dies in Jail

The second suspect in the killing of an 18-year-old college student died while in detention Sunday evening.

Senior Supt. Tomas Apolinario, Southern Police District director, said Reynold Clave died inside the detention cell at Taguig City Police Station around 10:45 p.m. on October 23.

Clave was one of the suspects in the killing of Nick Russel Oniot who was stabbed 18 times by robbers.

Apolinario said initial findings of police on the cause of death is medical complexity inside jail.

"Na-suffocate yata dahil overcrowded 'yung jail doon. Sobrang masikip. Nagkasakit, baka atake sa puso, et cetera," Apolinario told GMA News Online over the phone.

"Nadala naman siya sa Taguig Pateros Hospital pero patay na," he added.

He said more or less 80 detainees were detained when the incident happened.

The first suspect in the killing of Oniot, Marvin Bernardo, was earlier killed while en route to the police station after allegedly grabbing the firearm of a police officer.

Oniot, an architecture student, was on his way home on Oct. 14 when two suspects attempted to steal his backpack.

The suspects stabbed him when he refused to give up his backpack.

Clave and Bernardo were arrested by police in a follow-up operation
